Carolina Saddlebags

This is a male Carolina Saddlebags Dragonfly, (aka Tramea carolina), that I photographed in a salt marsh in Oceanside. I am no one’s idea of a dragonfly expert but I do happen to have one on staff. Well, okay, I don’t actually have any staff to speak of but I do know a few experts in different fields and they manage to make me sound informed. Annette, my dragonfly expert, has been identifying these amazing insects for me since 2014. She has her own blog, Dragonfly Dazed, where you can find dozens of great photographs of both dragonflies and damselflies. Check it out, it’s pretty cool. JK

  1. Thanks for the link, Joe. It’s good to “know people” – dragonfly identification seems even more of a puzzle than bird identification with such tiny features and such variety. Looks like I’ll be giving up my childhood generalities – if it’s big bodied it’s a dragonfly and if it’s has a skinny bodied it’s a darning needle. Is there really such a thing? Life was so simple then. 🙂
    Nice shot, too!

  2. You are most welcome Jane. As for “knowing people”, don’t think for one moment that I don’t get a kick out of saying that I have a dragonfly expert. 🙂 Seriously though, many is the time that those experts are the sole reason I ever sound informed. JK.
