White-throated Sparrow

Thursday, February 6, 2020,

This is a White-throated Sparrow I saw at Morton Refuge. These are amongst my favorite birds. Don’t get me wrong. I like them all but this is the bird that first sparked my interest in Audubon and birding. These beautiful yet hardy birds are a reason to welcome Old Man Winter. I love the white bib, the striped head, and that small but bright splash of yellow that says, “Yeah, I can be fancy, but I don’t need to be a show off”.  JK

  1. I also started my birding adventure because of these little guys. I took a picture of sparrows in my yard, thinking all sparrows were alike, and was stunned to see that flash of yellow above the bill! I had to know what I’d been missing all those years and the adventure began. I wonder if these unassuming little birds realize how inspiring they are!
    Beautiful shots, as always!

  2. Thanks Jane.
Yes, it’s hard to know what we start us off onto birding. And, like you, it was a photograph that began my own sorry downfall. Here’s that tale:

I’ve never posted that original photograph and I’m not sure where it is. I may find it in some old emails. JK.

  3. Michele, I grudgingly concede your point while maintaining that Orson Welles never looked so good. 🙂 JK.

  4. He just needed the yellow make-up.
And the bird needs a little bottle of wine. 😉
