  1. Is this the female? Look rather typically brownishly ducky to me. Are there black markings somewhere?

  2. Michele, much to my dismay, Black Ducks are not black. Having been raised on Looney Tunes, I have always expected Black Ducks to at least resemble Daffy Duck. Alas, the American Black Duck mostly resemble dark female Mallards, to which they are closely related.
But to answer your first question, this is a male Black Duck. The females have a dull olive-colored bill instead of this guys yellow one. JK.

  3. Ah, interesting. Are the females the same color but for the bill?
And if this is so, just what kind of duck IS Daffy Duck??

  4. From what I can discern from online sources, Daffy is supposedly modeled on the American Black Duck but he certainly doesn’t look like one with that coloration and the white ring on his neck. One source suggested that Daffy might be a hybrid of Mallard and Black Duck. The two species are closely related and do interbreed on occasion. JK.
