This is a White-breasted Nuthatch that I saw at Morton Wildlife Refuge in Noyack, NY, which is just out side Sag Harbor. I got pretty lucky with this shot because these birds don’t sit very still for long. They are very active among the tree limbs and trunks, looking for insects. I managed to capture this guy while he was checking me out. Below is a closeup of this little guy’s head. You can really see its feathers quite clearly. JK

This is a pic of an Honesty Plant. It is also known as the Silver Dollar or Money Plant. Those ‘leaves’ are actually seed pods that are now empty. For a pic of the pods with seeds, check out my post from August 19th. I think the pods look pretty cool either way. JK

These are a pair of shots of a male Gadwall at Frank Melville Memorial Park in Setauket. Gadwall are one species of many ‘winter ducks’ that come to Long Island to enjoy our balmy weather. While we might think our winters are cold, these birds find the conditions here less harsh than the northern climes where they generally spend the rest of the year. Gadwalls may not be as fancily colored as other ducks but they do have a certain understated beauty about them. Click on the pics for a larger view. They’re really kind of cool looking. JK
