Trumpet Vine Flowers

Monday, October 12, 2020,

These are the flowers of the Trumpet Vine aka Campsis radicans. Look at me throwing out that Latin name, in italics, no less. Are you impressed? Doesn’t it appear that I know my stuff? Smoke and mirrors, dear readers, smoke and mirrors. This is yet another case of me knowing folks that know stuff. In this particular instance, it’s my friend Sue Avery that has helped me sound informed. Sue has been my go-to person for flowers for several years. She has her own blog which is beautifully written. None of this wiseguy commentary that you find in lesser blogs. I invite all of you to check it out. And don’t miss her archived posts which are equally wonderful.  JK.

Red-breasted Nuthatch

Thursday, October 8, 2020,

This is a Red-breasted Nuthatch. They are not particularly rare but this is the first one that I’ve ever managed to get decent pics of. I’ve been fairly lucky with their cousins, the White-breasted Nuthatches but never with these guys. I was visiting Manor Farm in Huntington when I spied this guy feeding on Sunflower seed heads. Many birds were doing the same, including Chickadees, Cardinals, and Goldfinches. They are all beautiful birds, but I was very happy to have finally captured this handsome fellow. JK.

Palm Warbler

Monday, October 5, 2020,

This Palm Warbler is one the many migrating warblers that are passing through Long Island at this time. As far as I know, this is is the first time I’ve photographed one of these birds. It’s certainly the first time I’ve identified a Palm Warbler. I did not do this alone. In fact, when I first saw this bird, I thought it was a Yellow-rumped Warbler. But when I got home and did some homework with the several excellent online guides that are available, I realized I was mistaken. However, I recalled Mike Farina, the Conservation Biologist at the Marine Nature Study Area telling me that he had seen Palm Warblers that same day. So I looked up Palm Warbler and there it was. Still not quite trusting myself, I sent a pic to one of my birder friends and she confirmed my guess. It’s good to have friends that know stuff. JK.
