A Green Heron at Frank Melville Park

Thursday, August 22, 2019,

This is a Green Heron I saw at Frank Melville Park in Setauket. These beautiful birds have nested here for almost four years. I say almost because this year’s nest failed. Despite their failure, the herons still stop by from time to time. Hopefully, they will try again next year. I miss seeing the kids hanging about. JK

A Skipper at Avalon

Tuesday, August 20, 2019,

This is a Silver-spotted Skipper I saw at Avalon Park and Preserve in Stony Brook. This subtle beauty is perched upon a Yellow Coneflower, which may be a bit of an anomaly. When I Googled this butterfly, most of the results stated that Silver-spotted Skippers prefer blue, red, pink, or purple flowers and that they rarely visit yellow ones. Maybe this one is color blind. Or, perhaps, it likes thinking outside the box. JK.
