Left and Right

This is a Yellow-rumped Warbler I came across at Frank Melville Park in Setauket. It was searching for insects in an open field. He would take a couple of hops, pause, look left and right, and continue. Sometimes he would kick over a leaf to look beneath it, snatching up any prizes he came across.

When the supply of  insects run out, these guys will switch to berries and even seeds, making them pretty unique amongst warblers in general. Most warblers are strictly insect eaters, which is why the Yellow-rumps tend to be our only over-wintering warbler. I, for one, am glad they stick around. I can use all the photo ops I can find. JK
