Fish Crow at West Meadow Beach

This is a Fish crow. I want to thank my friend Michele from the Four Harbors Audubon Society for insisting that I take these shots. Without her gentle persuasion (read: nagging) I would not have gotten my first verifiable pics of a Fish Crow. I am always psyched to capture a new species so getting this handsome brute under my belt is a real pleasure.

Look at me, Ma! On top of the world!

Crow At Wertheim Refuge

Wednesday, November 25, 2008

I’m not sure why I like this shot. It’s probably because most of my pics of crows are usually silhouettes. I took this photo three weeks ago while on the Lower Carmans River as it winds through the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. This guy is just leaving the ground. I was lucky to catch him while he was still low to the ground. If I snapped the shot when he reached the sky I wouldn’t be able to capture the detail in his feathers. It would be an even better shot if the crow was coming towards me but I’ll take what I can get. JK

Red-tail And Crows

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

These are some shots I took while I was out kayaking Sunday. Two crows were showing this poor defenseless Red-tailed Hawk to the exit. Something about an exclusive neighborhood, I think. I guess being top dog isn’t always easy.

The Red-tail appears to be missing one of its primaries on its left wing. I don’t think it happened during this encounter, unless it occurred before I caught sight of their altercation. The pic below shows the missing feather a bit more clearly. JK
