I took this shot at the end of October on the Peconic River. JK

This is a young Green Heron that I photographed at the end of July. You can tell by his (or her) streaked neck. He was fishing along a small stream that joins Carmans River. These birds tend to be fairly shy. Usually I just see their back ends in flight and I wonder, “Whose butt is that?” I’m not kidding. It happens a lot. I got lucky with this guy. I suspected that he might be ahead – I saw that butt – so I went upstream real slow and quiet. And there he was. I gave him lots of space and he gave me plenty of time to snap some decent pics. I even got a shot of him with a fish in his mouth but the shot is less than terrific so I didn’t include it in this post. JK

This Green Heron was doing some fishing last week at David Weld Sanctuary. This is the same freshwater pond where I found some Green Frogs and a Box Turtle taking a dip. The pond is in a heavily wooded section of the sanctuary so it is usually dimly lit. JK

I am not a birder but I believe this bird is a juvenile Tricolored Heron. I’ve seen a couple of these beauties before but always from a distance. Sometimes they look like skinny Great Blues to me.
A very animated fisher, he puts his whole body into catching his prey, not just his neck. Sibley states that these birds will often run after fish but I didn’t see any of that kind of action, just a few full-body lunges.
These were the first shots I’ve gotten of these truly elegant birds that were good enough to show to anyone. I’ve never been close enough to get a pic that showed any detail, but this guy was very cooperative. He felt safe beside his island of grass and I stayed behind one of my own. Joe Stealth strikes again. JK
