This is a shot that I took over a year ago at Sunken Meadow Park. This Snowy Egret had raised the plumes on the back of his head giving him the appearance of a punk rocker. Does anyone remember Billy Idol? It wasn’t that long ago, was it? I think I’m showing my age. JK

Okay, so this isn’t a shot that you’ll find in National Geographic. But we’re not as classy an organization here and as such, we’re not afraid to give you the real poop. Besides, this is something you do see while kayaking or bird watching. I myself am not a birder but I hear good things.
I’ve noticed that many birds like to lose ballast prior to taking flight. Mom always said to go before you leave your perch. Still good advice, especially as I get older. After taking care of business, this guy stretches his wings and takes off. JK

This Common Snapping Turtle is taking a peek at me as I drift past him on the Lower Carmans River. This river – the lower half – is just fantastic for reflections. The water is generally calm and peaceful and makes for a great mirror as long as the wind doesn’t mar the surface. JK

This Mute Swan is just lifting off from the water. Actually, he is being chased off by another swan, the father of four nearly grown cygnets. I got to witness this twice because this bird landed near the family of his pursuer. He was then chased away again. Some birds get no respect. JK

This is one of two fawns that were wandering through the yard last Friday morning with their mother in tow. It is a real pleasure (and privilege) for me to see these things. As Long Island becomes more “developed” these sights are increasingly rare. I could do a lot of grumbling here but lets just enjoy the pretty pictures. JK
