Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk

This juvenile Red-tailed Hawk was sitting on a telephone wire during the snowstorm we had three days ago. Red-tails don’t get red tails till they become adults. I’d like to thank my friends Eric from Your Connection To Nature, Janine from Sweetbriar, and Sue from Four Harbors Audubon Society for helping me identify this guy. That tail was throwing me. JK

Red-tail And Crows

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

These are some shots I took while I was out kayaking Sunday. Two crows were showing this poor defenseless Red-tailed Hawk to the exit. Something about an exclusive neighborhood, I think. I guess being top dog isn’t always easy.

The Red-tail appears to be missing one of its primaries on its left wing. I don’t think it happened during this encounter, unless it occurred before I caught sight of their altercation. The pic below shows the missing feather a bit more clearly. JK

Even Big Guys Get Bullied

Thursday, April 17, 2008

A lot of kayaking lately, so not much time for yakking. You’ll get through, I’m sure. Here’s a couple of shots of a pair of Blue Jays mobbing a Red Tailed Hawk. Can two jays make a mob?

The hawk seems a bit disinterested but he moved on after a few minutes. This was the second place that these jays removed the hawk from. I guess he didn’t move far enough the first time. JK
